The unique high-tech design was created and patented in 2003 by German engineer, Alexander Böck. Since then, several brands of stilts have emerged worldwide, some of which now being very popular in the UK and Europe. The stilts are used for extreme sports by most, but are also used as an exercise tool. The term 'bocking' (taken obviously from the surname of the inventor) refers to the general action of using the stilts.

The Stats

Jump up to 5ft

Run up to speeds of 25mph +

Take up to 9ft strides

Jump over cars and other tall obstacles

Perform back flips, forward flips and other aerial moves

The Technical Bit

The stilts consist of a foot plate with bindings, a shin support at the top, all constructed around a leaf spring made from fibreglass. The stilts are designed to act like an extension of the leg (just with a little more springiness) and only slightly alter the body's centre of gravity, making standing, walking and jumping very easy. Most brands will sell jumping stilts according to the weight of the user. This is obviously because the strength of the leaf spring on a children's pair will need to be different to the pair for a 80kg adult. Due to their high quality and the very strong materials used, jumping stilts are incredibly durable.

Restaurants in Telford

Technical Analysis

Most of the jumping stilts available on the market at the moment are manufactured to a very high standard in a factory in Korea. The stilts are made up of hundreds of high quality parts and the overall structure is incredibly strong.

The rubber footpad is around the same size as a normal sized hand, and has a 'square patterned' tread. Although the tread isn't that deep, its certainly enough to provide sufficient grip on short grass. As you can see from the photo, the rubber footpad is attached to a metal sleeve that holds the spring. Bottoming out is where the bottom of the footplate (where your feet go) touches the metal around the rubber footpad.

The footplate itself is made of plastic, but has a strong metal support system underneath it. The footplate comes with two adjustable straps. One is tightened over the area just before your toes and the other (larger) strap tightens at the top of your foot. Having these straps tight, but also comfortable is very important as loose or uncomfortable straps can reduce your control / balance on the stilts.

At the top of the stilts is a foam cushion that is designed to rest just below your knee. Behind this cushion is a strap that has to be pulled tight, so that your leg is firmly against the foam cushion. As with the foot straps, this strap needs to be tight but also comfortable, as reduced control / balance will result.

The New Exercise

Jumping stilts are fast becomming not just an extreme sport product but also as a means of exercise. Unconfirmed claims suggest higher calorie burning rates than normal running (which makes sense as it takes an awfull lot more effort and muscle use to run with stilts than it does running normally). The great thing about using jumping stilts as an exercising product is that it is genuinly fun!

Running is great for getting fit and losing weight, but it can easily become very dull and boring. Exercsing with jumping stilts brings an element of fun and thus increases your motivation, which in turn increases your mental endurance. Remember that a lot of exercising is just about physival strength as it is about mental strength. This move requires a lot of commitment and a certain level of flexibility and arm strength. Its best to first try this move without your stilts to make sure you get the technique right. The best obstacle to use when doing it without your stilts would be an obstacle that is about your waist height, ideally a little above.

As with all jumping stilt tricks, remember to always wear the appropriate safety gear. Bottoming out your jumping stilts basically means where your foot plate meets the bracket connecting to the bottom of the spring and the foot pad and has its good and bad points. If you are bottoming out your stilts quite often, then its quite likely that you do not have the correct size / weight capacity stilts and may need to upgrade. If you are unsure its best to contact your supplier who will be able to best advise how to deal with the problem.

Other reasons for bottoming out can be:

Landing from a great height (large amount of downward force)

Weakening springs

Obviously if you are bottoming out after basic, medium height moves then you may either have the wrong size or weakening springs (which happens after a period of time, dependant on the frequency of use).

If you are bottoming out only on high downward force moves (landing from greater heights) then this is ok (providing you don't do it too often as this obviously wears the jumping stilts quicker). Bottoming out means you also get the maximum amount of upward force afterwards which is useful for front or backward flips. Another reason for not doing this too often is that when you bottom out you are no longer leaving the spring to absorb then landing force - instead, when the spring has reached its capacity, your body (or more specifically your spine) tends to take the extra landing force. If this force is quite substantial then serious damage can be caused so its best to realise why you are bottoming out and what you can do to reduce it (ie if wrong size/weak springs then change or extreme moves - do less often or consider more advanced stilts.

Again, remember to also wear safety gear when using your stilts. Gloves, wrist protection, knee pads and a helmet are incredibly important.

Tricks - The Split Kick

The split kick is another medium level trick that requires a good level of balance and general jumping stilts competence. Its best to do this trick in steps (move your legs bit by bit) to make sure you are comfortable moving your legs back to the landing position after landing.

This trick is certainly one of the cooler looking ones and looks great on photos (photos to follow).

As with everything, make sure you use all the necessary safety equipment, ie. hand and wrist protection, knee pads and a helmet.

Power Jumping Stilts

Power Jumping Stilts:
Get your Power Jumping Stilts - available now!

Jumping stilts give you the power to jump higher, run faster, get fit and best of all...have fun! They retail for between £130-£160 depending on age and brand. Because of they're ability to through the wearer quite high into the air and also move quite fast it is always recommended that all the necessary safety equipment is worn. This (as a minimum) is usually considered to be a jumping stilt helmet, jumping stilt knee pads, jumping stilt gloves and jumping stilt wrist support. Even the beginner will appreciate how important these pieces of equipment are, and they are even more important at the sort of level where you start to do tricks - however at this point things like back support products become a must.

Power Jumping Stilts is a common name for spring stilts and can sometimes be associated with other stilt brands like Pro-Jump and Poweriser (the 2 biggest brands available in the UK). These brands are widely available on the internet both on the suppliers website and also on eBay and Amazon.

Not sure if you should be buying a pair of power stilts? Why not check out some of the videos of spring stilts widely available on the internet. Places like Youtube are a huge source of Pro-Jump and Poweriser jumping stilt tricks, tutorials and general videos! For those who feel that they will get bored after a few uses, you can also hire power jumping stilts from several locations. The best way to find these is to do a search on the search engines.

Safety Gear

When you've got a pair of jumping stilts, chances are you are going to end up on the floor at least once. Your desire to push the envelope further, jump higher, run faster and even perform the really cool tricks can't always end with you on both feet, perfectly balanced. So if its going to happen, the least you can is make sure you are prepared. Most places that sell jumping stilts will also have the safety kit available as well. Sometimes its worth just checking around other on-line shops, as sometimes the stilt suppliers aren't always to cheapest when it comes to this stuff.

Hand & Wrist protection.

Probably the first choice when it comes to protection - obviously any falls are likely to result in your hands hitting the floor first. The height of the stilts will result in any fall being worse than normal so protecting the bits of your body that are likely to hit the ground first is a must! Normally any standard sporting gloves will do, just as long as they look like they will withstand being dragged along tarmac. With your wrists, your looking more for support - again any standard wrist supports should do the trick. Check out the large on-line sport websites for the best choice and prices.

Knee Protection.

Knees are another part of the body likely to take a good bashing if (sorry, when) you fall over. Again, due to the extra height, hitting your knee on tarmac can be pretty nasty, so its best to invest in some decent knee pads. Again, shop around the big on-line sports equipment websites for the best deal. Usually the knee pads recommended for motocrossing ect should do the trick.

Head and body protection.

Although these areas might seem as at risk as the others, especially when you are starting out, if you fancy yourself as the next jumping stilt champion chances are you are going to find your feet higher than your head at some point (ie trying to do a flip). A decent helmet is probably one of the most important safety products you can invest in when using jumping stilts. Because of the power and 'bounciness' of the stilts it doesn't take much for you to become off balance and have you head suddenly become lower than your feet. You will generally find a good range of sporting helmets on skateboarding websites, with advice on which ones provide the most protection. When it comes to body protection, the most common products tend to be the armoured jackets and the armoured spine supports. Being able to jump much higher and run much faster are very appealing. But just how fast can you run? Most websites claim around 20mph but this figure is almost always followed by a + sign. Some sites claim as high as 25mph and again tend to stick on a + sign on the end of this. The main reason for the differences and the lack of accurate top speeds is because is does depend on personal ability and strength. The other reason is because (as I understand it) there isn't a recorded top speed.

You never know, with the right amount of practice, experience and strength, you might even be able to crack the 30mph barrier. Jumping stilts are becoming move advanced each year. Almost all of the brands are bringing out new, more improved, stronger and faster stilts. These products certainly enhance the human bodies performance, and with continuous development they pose to be ae to offer higher and higher speeds and higher and higher jumping heights.

Back flips

So how many back flips can you do on your jumping stilts? The trick is as it sounds. Its grabbing one spring or both whilst at the top of the jump. The trick is initiated by completing the kanga jump and gaining enough height to complete the trick.

The spring grab is a medium level trick and requires good balance and a sufficient level of experience in landing from height. Like all tricks its best to work up to the spring grab. You can do this by bending your knees towards your hands little by little, this way you can practice moving your legs at the top of the jump and moving them back before landing.

The star is basically a star jump (but wearing jumping stilts so its much cooler). This trick is similar to the spring grab in that it involves you bringing up your legs at the top of the jump to a position then returning them to the landing position.

As with anything to do jumping stilts, remember to also wear sufficient safety gear. Wrist/hand protection, knee pads and a helmet.

Introduction to Jumping Stilt Tricks

Lets be honest, none of us buy jumping stilts with the intention of just bouncing around little, we all want to run as fast as possible and jump as high as we can. This post will explain what the basic foundations are for performing the more serious stuff.

What's After Walking?

OK, so you've got no problem with walking. Now you want to try and pick up the pace and bring it up to a jog. The more force you put into the step the higher you will bounce. Doing this is pretty much the move known as a 'pogo'. A pogo is pretty much as it sounds, its bouncing from one leg onto the other. Its worth practising each and every new move you try to the point where you are more than comfortable with it - this will massively increase your balance and general competence on the stilts. Once you are happy with this you can pick up the pace again. Essentially, all you do from here is go a little faster, master your balance at that speed, then try going a little faster again. Before you know it you'll be blasting around 20mph+.

Essentially, the main thing to remember here is that its one stage at a time. Master the basic movement, then increase the speed. Remember that the usual safety gear is very important when doing this sort of stuff (moving at high speed and bouncing quite high). Ensure you have knee pads, gloves/wrist support and a helmet.

Getting some real height...

There's certainly a real technique involved in jumping 'really' high. Essentially, you start off the move by running, once you have built up enough speed you move onto what is known as the 'kanga jump' which is jumping with your feet together. Going from a run to a kanga jump concentrates your energy more into the upward jumping force, propelling you higher into the air. This is quite a tricky move and again its best to start small (run slow and bounce less high). You really have to commit to the move and it only takes you to be a little off balance on the launch to be in store for a nasty landing. Safety gear for this move is even more important because of the increased height and speed. Remember to always wear (at least) knee pads, gloves/wrist protection and a helmet.

Tricks - The Tuck

The tuck is one of those tricks you move onto after mastering the basics. Once your fine with things like running and maybe pogo'ing you will have the necessary balance needed to complete a tuck.

Completing a tuck is pretty much as it sounds. Its where you bring your knees up at the top of the jump and form a 'tucked in' position. This move requires a good level of balance and timing. Its always best to practice by only bringing your knees up half of the way to start - this way you can make sure you can land the move. As with almost all tricks its best to try and practice in stages, this way you can build up to the full move and be sure you will land back on hand ground feet first and not face first.

Again, remember to always wear safety gear when performing any jumping stilt tricks. Not investing in gloves/wrist protection, knee pads and a helmet when you have jumping stilts is asking for trouble.

Learning to Walk

Learning to walk is the first thing you will do with your jumping stilts, so making sure you do it right is important.

Once you've got your stilts on you need to get into the best starting position, this is normally the sitting position, so any raised object is ideal. Make sure you have something to lean against close by for when you stand up, like a wall or some other tall (but sturdy) object. With one hand, push up off the object you are sitting on, and with the other hand, lean against (in this case) the nearby wall. Turn and face the wall and practise lifting your feet up off the grounds, like taking small steps on the spot. This will help you get the feel for the stilts and also help you understand how far apart your legs need to be to stop them from clipping each other.

Once you are comfortable, try walking along the wall (whilst still leaning on it slightly). This way you can practice those first steps and not have to worry about tripping or falling. Make sure you lift your legs high enough so not to drag the bottom of your stilts along the ground or clip small objects. Once you are happy doing this, try doing it without leaning on the wall (but staying close enough so if you trip you can still lean onto it).

And then guess what? Your walking!

*Please note that the writer is not responsible for any injuries as a result of this guide.

The Benefits of Using Jumping Stilts

1.
Increase Stature. These tend to have more of a presence in mainland Europe or (with some brands) professional jumping stilt owners. Below is a list of other jumping stilt brands along with some information about them and how they differ to other brands.

Powerskips

With they're biggest presence in Germany, Powerskips are actually the brand of stilts designed and manufactured and by the inventor. These stilts tend to come with a much higher price tag, however part of the premium price does mean you get a higher quality stilt with some of the latest innovations and materials. These stilts tend to be worn more by the professionals and are available through UK Good Deals Ltd (also the supplier of the Pro-Jump brand).

7LeagueBoots

With dealers in Canada, Austria and France, 7LeagueBoots fall into the same place in the marketplace as Powerisers and Pro-Jumps (lower end/beginner end). These retail for around 200 Euros (depending on size) and come with several differences to other brands. The manufacturer claims they:

Better positioned centre of gravity allowing you to jump higher and with less effort.#

The hooves are 25% thicker offering paralleled grip and longer lifespan

Bearings made from stainless steal and teflon coated copper providing fluid movement.

The spring protective sleeve is 3 times thicker offering higher protection and longer lifespan.

Powerisers

These are the 2nd most popular brand in the UK (Pro-Jump being number 1) and are suitable for the beginner market, retailing for around £150 (depending on size). They currently have other distributors in the US, France and Denmark. These stilts are (believed) to be made in the same factory as most other brands and so are of a high quality and very good for learning the basics (and even trying out a few basic tricks).

FlyJumpers & Powestriders

These are distributed in both Canada and France (in France these are distributed by the same company that also distributes Poweriser, 7LeagueBoots) and also the US (just Powerstriders). These stilts are also suitable for the beginner market but retail for around 279 Euros (again dependant on size) so offer a little higher quality and strength than some other cheaper brands.

Generally, in the UK you will have the choice of either Pro-Jumps or Powerisers as a starter pair of jumping stilts. The only time you will really want to consider a different brand is when you fancy moving onto the more professional stuff where a high quality stilt is more important. Then something like a Powerskip is the best bet as these are the most easily got in the UK

The new way to get fit

There appears to be yet more evidence that more and more people are using jumping stilts not as extreme sports products but as a means to exercise and keep fit, whilst having a lot of fun.

Many users are reporting:

Increased leg strength and tone

Increased endurance

Increased calorie burning

Increased core muscle strength

Shape magazine states: "Plyometric moves like jumping aren't just good for your bones; they may help you live longer. of 25mph. Designed by the German engineer Alexander Boeck, these jumping stilts (as they are also known) are available in many different brands all over the world. Spring stilts have become have a very large following in both North America and Europe, and Youtube contains 100's of videos of spring stilts - with anything from ammeture to professional stunts men.

Spring jumping stilts usually retail for anything between £110 and £170, depending on which brand and which supplier you get them from. They are mainly purchased on the internet but sometimes can be found on the high street (from niche sports equipment shops). Safety equipment is always a must as falling over whilst wearing a pair of spring stilts is very likely when you first start out. Now most clips and videos of these products will be of people who are quite experienced (may even be able to do a few tricks) and so as a result, your first impressions will not be 'wow that looks hard to walk', because they make it look easy. When you buy a pair of jumping stilts the first thing that you realise is that they are big (usually about up to your waist).

When you put them on for the first time, it will feel very weird and quite unnatural. Once you manage to stand up for the first time (which almost always requires the help of someone else) you will find walking quite hard to get the hang of (depending on your general level of balance). Some people have managed to start walking relatively well with 3-4 minutes, whilst others have remained looking like a new born dear for 20 or 30 minutes. However long it takes you, try not to be discouraged - overall, we have found people to get the hang of things quite quickly and can get most people up to at least a steady walking pace in a 30 minute session (worst case scenario).

The next balance issue you will have is bouncing. Most peoples natural inclination is to keep their legs straight when bouncing - this results in an uncontrolled landing, throwing you off balance and usually onto the floor. Keeping your legs straight will also reduce the the springs potential and result in not being to jump as high. We have found that the best way to gain balance from jumping is bouncing from one leg onto another - basically jogging (on the spot or forwards) but putting more weight onto the legs. This will quickly improve your competence on the stilts and (on average) within 20-30minutes you should be able to progress onto the next step

Bouncing on both feet can prove the most difficult. Its much easier to lose your balance when doing this as your feet can touch the ground at slightly different times - causing you to bounce to the side, messing up your balance. Practice is the best way round this - working up bit by bit to the bigger jumps. Once you are comfortable, you can move onto getting the most height out of your stilts. We find the best technique for this is to bounce from one foot onto the other to the point where you are almost getting the maximum out of the spring and then bouncing from that onto the 2 footed bounce (remembering to bend your knees). This way you bounce higher and be able to pull off the more interesting tricks (the tuck, spring grab, split kick this policy sets out how we will treat your personal information.

(1) This privacy policy

This privacy policy is based on a template created by SEQ Legal. Premium templates available from SEQ Legal include: confidentiality agreements, consultancy agreements and distribution agreements.

(2) What information do we collect?

We may collect, store and use the following kinds of personal information:

[(a) information about your computer and about your visits to and use of this website (including [your IP address, geographical location, browser type and version, operating system, referral source, length of visit, page views, website navigation and [details]]);]

[(b) information relating to any transactions carried out between you and us on or in relation to this website, including information relating to any purchases you make of our goods or services (including [details]);]

[(c) information that you provide to us for the purpose of registering with us (including [details]);]

[(d) information that you provide to us for the purpose of subscribing to our website services, email notifications and/or newsletters (including [details]);]

[(e) any other information that you choose to send to us; and]

[(f) other information.]

[(3) Cookies

A cookie consists of information sent by a web server to a web browser, and stored by the browser. The information is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server. This enables the web server to identify and track the web browser.

We [may] use [both] [“session” cookies] [and “persistent” cookies] on the website. [We will use the session cookies to: keep track of you whilst you navigate the website; and [other uses].] [We will use the persistent cookies to: enable our website to recognise you when you visit; and [other uses].]

[Session cookies will be deleted from your computer when you close your browser.] [Persistent cookies will remain stored on your computer until deleted, or until they reach a specified expiry date.]

[We use Google Analytics to analyse the use of this website. Google Analytics generates statistical and other information about website use by means of cookies, which are stored on users' computers. The information generated relating to our website is used to create reports about the use of the website. Google will store this information. Google's privacy policy is available at: http://www.google.com/privacypolicy.html.]

[Our [advertisers/payment services providers] may also send you cookies.]

[We publish Google Adsense interest-based advertisements on our website. These are tailored by Google to reflect your interests. To determine your interests, Google will track your behaviour across the web using cookies. You can view, delete or add interest categories associated with your browser using Google's Ads Preference Manager, available at: http://www.google.com/ads/preferences/. You can opt-out of the Adsense partner network cookie at: http://www.google.com/privacy_ads.html. However, this opt-out mechanism uses a cookie, and if you clear the cookies from your browser your opt-out will not be maintained. To ensure that an opt-out is maintained in respect of a particular browser, you should use the Google browser plug-in available at: http://www.google.com/ads/preferences/plugin.]

Most browsers allow you to reject all cookies, whilst some browsers allow you to reject just third party cookies. For example, in Internet Explorer you can refuse all cookies by clicking “Tools”, “Internet Options”, “Privacy”, and selecting “Block all cookies” using the sliding selector. Blocking all cookies will, however, have a negative impact upon the usability of many websites[, including this one].]

(4) Using your personal information

Personal information submitted to us via this website will be used for the purposes specified in this privacy policy or in relevant parts of the website.

We may use your personal information to:

[(a) administer the website;]

[(b) improve your browsing experience by personalising the website;]

[(c) enable your use of the services available on the website;]

[(d) send to you goods purchased via the website, and supply to you services purchased via the website;]

[(e) send statements and invoices to you, and collect payments from you;]

[(f) send you general (non-marketing) commercial communications;]

[(g) send you email notifications which you have specifically requested;]

[(h) send to you [our newsletter and other] marketing communications relating to our business [or the businesses of carefully-selected third parties] which we think may be of interest to you by post or, where you have specifically agreed to this, by email or similar technology (you can inform us at any time if you no longer require marketing communications) ;]

[(i) provide third parties with statistical information about our users – but this information will not be used to identify any individual user;]

[(j) deal with enquiries and complaints made by or about you relating to the website; and]

[(k) other uses.]

[Where you submit personal information for publication on our website, we will publish and otherwise use that information in accordance with the license you grant to us.]

[We will not without your express consent provide your personal information to any third parties for the purpose of direct marketing.]

[All our website financial transactions are handled through our payment services provider, PayPal.
